OFFICIAL POLICY STATEMENT
of the
STRIKE EDUCATION COMMITTEE

May 6, 1968

We are asking all faculty and students to respect the strike by refusing to teach or attend classes within regular classroom buildings. ANY CLASS HELD INSIDE A BUILDING WILL BE CONSIDERED A STRIKE-BREAKING CLASS. ANY CLASS HELD OUTSIDE THE BUILDINGS WILL BE CONSIDERED STRIKE-RESPECTING IF THE CLASS SO CONSIDERS ITSELF.

I. What is a Liberated Class?

The format for Liberated Classes is quite simple. Anyone who respects the strike and is interested in teaching a class can teach one, and anyone who is interested in attending a class can attend one. Any subject can be taught. The students and the teacher together decide how they wish to approach the subject (for example, what the form of the class will be, and what part of the subject will be emphasized). This approach to classes is democratic and presents a great opportunity for experimentation in new ways of learning and for making classes more relevant to the students' lives.

II. The Strike Education Committee

The SEC exists to help the teachers and students of Liberated Classes. The SEC publishes a daily catalogue of places, times, titles, and instructors for Liberated Classes. These notices are posted around campus, distributed among students, and broadcast over WKCR. The SEC also will do all it can to arrange meeting places and provide necessary equipment for Liberated Classes. Although we would like all Liberated Classes to be listed with the SEC, such a listing is not a criterion for being a Liberated Class.

III. Buildings

Because of the strike, buildings will be picketed and any classes held in those buildings will be strike-breaking classes. The SEC will do its best to supply substitute equipment for those classes which need equipment from the buildings.

If you want to list a Liberated Class or desire further information, contact the SEC at Room 316 FBH or phone 280-3596.
