Dear Sir:

It was felt Friday after the preliminary tabulation of the Service Societies' Referendum, that the circumstances were such that an unqualified release of the preliminary balloting results could have precipated further polarization and intransigence among the faculty, students, community, and administration. In lieu pf a recognized arbiter, this committee could not reconcile any unintended, possibly violent consequences of the preliminary tabulation with the initial objectives of the committee.

Our attempt to attain unassailable statistics has failed, thoughfar less than could any petition or statement. These 5,500 ballots represent, at best, only a cross section of student sentiment. We wish to remind you that the enclosed analysis cannot and should not be ignored if the referendum is to be a significant indicator of University student opinion.

It is out hope that effort as well as that of the voters may in some way facilitate an intelligent resolution of the problems confronting all of us.

Respectfully,
