What follows is
an array of interactive materials relating to the early history of Columbia
College -- the eight decades that constitute the second chapter in the larger history
of Columbia University. (The first chapter, the History of King's College,
1754-1775, has its own web site.) This chapter encompasses the period from the renaming,
rechartering and reorganizing of King's College as Columbia College in 1784 to the move of
the College from its original site in lower Manhattan off Park Place to a then as yet
undeveloped block on Madison and 49th Street in 1857.
This website is being developed by undergraduates of Barnard and Columbia Colleges, as an
experimental project overseen by the Barnard Electronic Archive and Teaching Lab [BEATL].
It receives general financial support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and targeted
support from the Columbia 250th Anniversary Committe of Columbia University. Content
assistance has been provided by the University Archives and Columbiana Room, as well as
the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division and the Electronic Text Service of Butler
Library, Columbia University. Technical support has been forthcoming from ACIS and Barnard
Library.... [BLASE].
