A thematically and chronologically ordered 
narrative of the impact of the Atlantic Ocean 
and its tidal tributaries upon the beginnings 
and subsequent development of the American 
colonies and of the Early American Republic.  
Special stress will be placed upon the physical 
givens and cultural implications of the coastal
environment in which early Americans went 
about their lives.
